President Obama commutes sentences of 46 people

California readers may be interested to learn that President Barack Obama commuted the sentences of 46 mostly nonviolent drug offenders on July 13. According to the White House, most of the individuals would have already completed their sentences had current sentencing laws been in effect at the time they were charged.

Man taken into custody for car theft in California

Police say that a 32-year-old man was taken into custody after stealing a car in Palm Springs. Authorities say that they responded to a call at about 6:17 a.m. on July 9 regarding the theft in progress on the 2300 block of Via Lazo. Within minutes, an officer noticed the car on the 2200 block of South Palm Canyon Drive, and the man stopped the vehicle before fleeing on foot.

States reducing penalties for low-level drug crimes

California residents may be shocked to learn that some of Connecticut's drug laws, which are often considered to be some of the harshest in the country, are scheduled to become more lenient in the fall of 2015. Some of the changes may include reducing certain felonies to misdemeanors.

How California ranks in its drunk driving laws

While the minimum legal drinking age in the United States is 21 and a driver in any state is considered alcohol impaired when having a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher, there are still many variants in drunk driving rules across the nation. A consumer finance website recently highlighted the differences by analyzing law enforcement rules in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in regards to driving while under the influence.
