California has responded to the problem of spousal abuse by putting some tough domestic violence laws in place. However, none of that takes away the constitutional rights of the accused. I am prepared to protect those rights in cases involving both of the following charges:

• Criminal domestic violence: If you are accused of physically injuring your current or former spouse, someone you currently or formerly lived with, or someone you have had a child with, you can be charged with the criminal offense of domestic violence.
• Violating a protective order: If you violate a domestic violence protective order — even if the allegations behind the order are false or exaggerated — you can be charged with disobeying a court order, a separate offense from domestic violence itself.
