Fraud alleged in redemption of recycled containers in California

An investigation involving the illegal redemption of bottles and cans that were transferred from Arizona to California has resulted in the arrest of five people. Approximately $14 million was refunded as a part of the allegations in this plot. It is illegal for containers from outside the state to take part in the recycling program and derive benefit from the deposit - 5 or 10 cents - since the charge was not added to the cost of the container when it was purchased.

Woman turns herself in after champagne theft

At around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, a woman in California surrendered to authorities in order to face charges for stealing six bottles of champagne. The 49-year-old woman was accused of taking the champagne from a grocery store in Santa Cruz on Jan. 19. On Feb. 10, police issued photos to the media that showed the woman they referred to as the 'bubbly bandit."

California probation officer arrested for fraud

On Jan. 20, officials from the Los Angeles County Probation Department announced they will pursue charges against a male probation officer who allegedly attempted to defraud the department of extra sick pay. The 41-year-old was taken into custody by sheriff's deputies on Jan. 17.

California checkpoint results in DUI charges, impounded vehicles

Police in California took one driver into custody as a result of a DUI checkpoint, according to reports. Officers conducted the checkpoint from 7 p.m. on Dec 27 to 2 a.m. on Dec. 28 on the 1900 block of Ming Ave. in Bakersfield. The DUI checkpoint resulted in one driver being detained under suspicion of drunk driving. However, officers said that they identified 25 drivers who had no valid driver's license. Nine of those drivers were reportedly operating their vehicles with a suspended license, and 12 vehicles were impounded at the checkpoint. A sergeant from the Bakersfield Police Department said that 659 vehicles were screened at the checkpoint.

4 detained in California carjacking

Three California juveniles and one man were taken into custody on Dec. 18 after the four individuals allegedly were involved in a carjacking. According to police, the incident began shortly before 8 p.m. when the four individuals drove up to a Toyota Camry in a Nissan Versa and stole the Toyota at gunpoint.

California man accused of robbing at least 7 banks

Authorities reported on Dec. 5 that a 27-year-old man suspected to be involved in seven or more bank robberies was taken into custody after allegedly fleeing from Westminster police. Reportedly, the pursuit began at approximately 3:10 p.m., when the 27-year-old man allegedly robbed a Westminster bank and attempted to flee in a taxi that he had already summoned to the bank location.

California man accused of multiple offenses against 2 women

On Nov. 14, police took a 24-year-old Oakland man into custody on suspicion of rape and assault. According to authorities, the man might have been involved in two crimes, with the first occurring on Oct. 6 and the second, on Nov. 5.

Suge Knight and Katt Williams charged with robbery

Some California fans of rap may not yet be aware that, on Oct. 29, police detained music producer 'Suge" Knight and comedian 'Katt" Williams on suspicion of stealing a camera from a photographer. While the alleged incident occurred in Beverly Hills, Knight was taken into custody in Las Vegas and Williams was taken into custody from a courthouse in Inglewood.
