In the early morning hours of October 23, a suspected drunk driver crashed his vehicle into several objects along a California street, causing it to burst into flames. The incident took place in Garden Grove.
According to the Garden Grove Police Department, the 24-year-old defendant was driving south on Euclid Street when he smashed into a light pole, a street light and a bus stop bench as he approached Main Street. His vehicle then caught fire as a result of the collisions. The defendant and two male passengers were able to exit the vehicle and escape the flames. One of the passengers suffered moderate injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Once police and rescue crews arrived at the scene, the defendant allegedly made statements indicating that he may have been driving under the influence of alcohol. He was taken into custody and charged with DUI.
Individuals facing drunk driving charges could be sentenced to lengthy prison terms and assessed heavy fines. They could also have their driver’s license suspended or be required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle. However, a lawyer who is experienced with DUI cases may help a defendant avoid some or all of these penalties. For example, an attorney could challenge the results of any field sobriety or blood alcohol content tests that were performed, which could cause the charges to be dropped, and the case to be dismissed. Alternatively, legal counsel may recommend negotiating a plea deal that reduces the charges and penalties. For instance, a first-time offender may be allowed to complete an alcohol diversion program in lieu of going to jail.
