California movie fans may be interested to learn that the 24-year-old son of Sean Penn and Robin Wright was taken into custody for alleged drug possession on April 4. The incident took place in Nebraska.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, officers pulled over a 1992 Volvo for failing to signal. During the stop, they noticed that the occupants of the car, Hopper Penn and his girlfriend, were allegedly engaged in drug activity. The officers conducted a search of the vehicle and reportedly found 14 grams of marijuana, 3 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and four amphetamine pills.
Penn was placed under arrest and charged with one count of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and one felony count of possession of a controlled substance for the mushrooms. His 26-year-old girlfriend was arrested and charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance for the amphetamines and the mushrooms. They were both booked into Hamilton County Jail. Penn has acted in several films, including 2017’s “War Machine”. In 2016, he revealed that he has been battling an addiction to methamphetamine for years.
If convicted, individuals who have been issued drug charges could face serious consequences including incarceration and fines. Such charges could also threaten current and future education and employment opportunities. However, a criminal defense attorney could help a defendant fight the charges and obtain a more favorable outcome. In some cases, an attorney could use a number of defense strategies to get the charges dropped. In other cases, an attorney could push for a defendant with a history of addiction to be sentenced to substance abuse treatment instead of going to jail.
