Couple arrested for delivering drugs with drone

On Dec. 28, police arrested a California couple for allegedly attempting to deal drugs from their house by using a drone. Authorities said that they investigated the defendants after receiving a tip in early December about illegal activity taking place at the home.

Undercover Riverside police officers surveilled the residence and witnessed a drone flying to a nearby parking lot. Once there, it dropped bundles of drugs to customers. A search warrant was served at the home on the morning of Dec. 21, and a 39-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were taken into custody. Inside the residence, investigators discovered used hypodermic needles, powder believed to be fentanyl, methamphetamine, candies believed to contain LSD and the delivery drone. The fire department assisted with the search because the property contained hazardous materials.

Investigators found that the male defendant’s 9-year-old daughter was also living at the home. Drug paraphernalia was found in her bedroom. Officers called Child Protective Services, and the girl was eventually placed in the custody of her mother. Both defendants have been charged with child endangerment, possession of controlled substances, possession for the purposes of sale and conspiracy to commit a crime.

If convicted, individuals charged with drug distribution often face harsh consequences. Typical sentences for such crimes include lengthy prison terms, heavy fines and the seizure of personal property. However, a criminal defense attorney could help a defendant receive a better outcome. In some situations, an attorney could fight the charges and get the case dismissed. In other circumstances, legal counsel could negotiate a plea deal that allows the defendant to plead guilty to reduced charges.
