Two Californians facing drug and gun charges in Santa Maria

According to law enforcement authorities with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, a man and a woman were taken into custody on drug and gun charges on Nov. 10. The incident reportedly happened in Santa Maria at 6 p.m.

Officers responded to a neighbor’s report of a burglary. When they arrived, they found a convicted felon who is currently on probation residing in the residence. The officers report that they found methamphetamine in the 24-year-old man’s possession and a locked safe. They also reportedly found drug paraphernalia.

Upon opening the safe, officers report that they found a gun and ammunition. The man was taken into custody on charges of being a felon in possession of a weapon. A 29-year-old woman who was also present was taken into custody on charges of possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The man is being held without bond. The woman’s bond was set at an amount of $10,000.

Drug charges may be result in harsh penalties if the people who are accused are convicted of the offenses. Experienced criminal defense attorneys may be able to build strong defense cases against the allegations. In this case, the lawyers for the woman might argue that the methamphetamines and paraphernalia were not hers. They may also argue that the search of the woman was improper if it was done without a warrant. The attorneys may file motions in order to seek the suppression of the evidence in the cases against their clients. If they are successful, they may win dismissal of the charges from the prosecution. Criminal defense lawyers may also be able to secure pleas to lesser charges or to lesser sentences that help their clients to avoid prison sentences.
