Two California men were taken into police custody on Sept. 7 after they were accused of selling methamphetamine and other associated drug crimes. The two men, ages 38 and 39, were arrested after an officer conducted a traffic stop on their vehicle in Watsonville.
The officer pulled over the vehicle for a traffic violation at about 11:13 p.m. in the area of Main Street and Freedom Boulevard. The officer reportedly found that the two vehicle occupants both had outstanding warrants, so they were taken into custody. Investigators then searched the vehicle and recovered methamphetamine and a loaded firearm. Authorities also searched one of the accused individual’s residence, where more meth and another firearm were discovered. In total, authorities said that they seized two pounds of meth.
Both individuals were charged with possession of methamphetamine, transportation of a controlled substance for sale, outstanding warrants and for possession of a loaded firearm. The 38-year-old man was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
California authorities take accusations of drug possession and drug trafficking seriously. However, even those who are accused of being involved in drug crimes have rights that cannot be violated. For example, a criminal law attorney may investigate the case to determine if the officer had probable cause to conduct a traffic stop in the first place. If there was no evidence of a crime being committed during the traffic stop, the attorney may also investigate whether or not the officer legally searched the vehicle. If the traffic stop or the vehicle search was illegal, any evidence that was found may be suppressed, potentially resulting in a dismissal or a reduction in the severity of the charges.
