Officers to utilize DUI checkpoints during holiday weekend

California residents who are planning on traveling to the Los Angeles County area for the Fourth of July weekend should be aware that law enforcement will be out in force to catch impaired drivers. The DUI Saturation Patrols will be active from June 29 to July 1 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

In addition to DUI Saturation Patrols, law enforcement will be utilizing DUI checkpoints, which have been shown to lower the number of residents injured or killed by drivers who were impaired by drugs or alcohol. During the DUI checks, deputies will be looking specifically for signs of impairment, which could include alcohol on the driver’s breath, slurred speech and glassy, red eyes. Those who intend to drink, use prescription medications or marijuana should find a designated driver or use the Designated Driver VIP app to arrange a safe ride for the holiday weekend.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 years old are particularly at risk when it comes to drunk driving. In 2015, for example, 49 percent of the drivers in this age range who were killed had a blood alcohol content that was higher than the legal limit.

If a person is accused of having a blood alcohol content that is higher than .08 percent, he or she could face drunk driving charges. If convicted, the person could lose their driving privileges and potentially even face a jail sentence depending on his or her alcohol blood content and whether or not the person has prior DUI convictions. A criminal law attorney can advocate for the accused person during both the administrative hearing and the actual criminal case.
