On March 24, it was reported that a married California couple were taken into police custody for selling narcotics after the wife accidentally texted a detective and offered him prescription pills. According to the report, the woman did not realize that she had used the wrong number.
A detective working in Placer County reportedly received the text from the Citrus Heights woman. The detective continued to talk to the 41-year-old woman even though her identity at the time was unknown. Authorities then set up a sting where they would pose as buyers. Both the woman and her husband, age 45, showed up to the meeting location where they were taken into custody.
Both the wife and the husband were charged with possession of narcotic substances for distribution. The woman was being held in custody on $20,000 bail while the man was being held on bond set at $95,000.
Drug trafficking charges can have serious legal consequences that could potentially include a long prison sentence, major fines and a criminal record if the prosecution is able to obtain a conviction. Depending on the situation, a criminal law attorney may provide a defense by arguing that any drugs found did not belong to the defendant. If the attorney finds that authorities tampered with the evidence, counsel may argue that it should not be admitted in court, resulting in the case potentially being dismissed altogether.
