L.A. Rams player Troy Hill charged with DUI

Los Angeles Rams player Troy Hill was charged with suspicion of driving while intoxicated after crashing his car on the 101 Freeway on Nov. 19. The accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say Hill was driving a white Mercedes Benz west on 101 Freeway near Haskell Avenue when he swerved to the right and smashed into a tractor-trailer. Officers said Hill showed signs of being drunk when they arrived on the scene. They subjected him to a series of field sobriety tests and determined that he was intoxicated.

Hill was transported to the Los Angeles Police Department’s jail in Van Nuys and booked on suspicion of DUI. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, he was released after posting a $15,000 bail. The Rams issued a statement on Hill’s arrest, but provided few details because it is an “ongoing legal matter.” The team said the cornerback would be inactive for the Ram’s game against the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 20.

Individuals arrested on DUI charges can face severe consequences if they are convicted. Typical penalties may include significant jail time, heavy fines and the loss of driving privileges. It can therefore be advisable for those who are facing these types of charges to meet with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible to discuss how to fight the allegations. One possible avenue could be to challenge the traffic stop itself as being made without the required reasonable suspicion on the part of the police officer.
