DWI prevention patches may arrive in California

Many individuals who drive under the influence in California and across the country are not aware that they are too intoxicated to drive. This is because alcohol can reduce someone’s decision making abilities, and they may feel that they are better able to handle themselves in a vehicle than they are. A start-up, DermaTec, believes that they may have a solution to this problem.

The organization has created patches that change color based on the amount of alcohol that someone has consumed, and the patch is able to do this using the individual’s sweat. If someone has consumed enough alcohol to put them over the legal limit, the patch will change colors.

Using a patch, people no longer have to do guesswork to determine if they are sober enough to drive. The start-up is still looking for funding and a way to mass produce the patches, but they have already received some grants. Owners of the start-up are hoping to work with businesses to create unique patches for different bars and restaurants.

If someone is facing DUI charges, even if it is for the first time, a lawyer may be able to assist them with fighting these charges. While someone may assume that a single DUI conviction is not a big deal since it is usually not a felony, the reality is that a conviction can result in large fines and the loss of driving privileges. In some cases, a conviction may even result in jail time for first offenders. People may also discover it is difficult to obtain a job with a DUI conviction. A lawyer could help to have charges dismissed if is determined that police violated someone’s rights or did not collect evidence in an appropriate manner.
