Californians who are interested in Roswell, New Mexico, and its alleged UFOs from the 1950s may want to learn about a recent case in which a teenage boy was charged with stealing a model spacecraft from outside of the town’s UFO museum. According to law enforcement authorities with the Roswell Police Department, the boy was one of three individuals who reportedly stole the spaceship and then smashed it along the side of a road.
Sources indicate that three people were seen on a surveillance video removing the spaceship and loading it into the back of a pickup truck. The model was later found in a ditch approximately two miles outside of the town. The incident reportedly happened around 3 a.m. on March 19.
Police didn’t indicate what led them to the boy. They said the boy refused to provide them with any information. They are still looking for the two others they believe to be involved. The 17-year-old boy was taken into custody and placed in the Chaves County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of felony larceny and conspiracy.
A person who is charged with a felony theft crime may face serious penalties if a conviction is obtained. A criminal defense attorney may review the evidence in order to determine how the defendant was identified as a suspect. If there appear to be problems with the identification procedure, the lawyer may file an evidentiary motion. When an identification motion is successful, the charges normally will be dismissed. If unsuccessful, it may be possible to obtain an agreement with the prosecutor for a reduced penalty in the event it is a first offense.
