Criminal charges for History Channel favorite

Not all reality shows are vapid and sensational as the popular History Channel series “Pawn Stars” often features historical information and interesting finds from all over the world that are brought before pawn brokers who must authenticate and bargain for them. California fans of the show may be familiar with Austin Russell, who is better known as “Chumlee.” He is now receiving attention not for his pawning prowess but an entanglement with law enforcement after he was detained by police on March 9.

When Las Vegas police officers went to Chumlee’s house to serve a warrant for a sexual assault case, they found marijuana, methamphetamine and at least one gun. He faces charges for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and drug possession, and he was booked into the Clark County Detention Center. The sexual assault case is ongoing, and no charges have been filed yet.

Pawn Stars” has produced more than 425 episodes, and the show wrapped work on its 12th season on Feb. 24. This show that takes place in Las Vegas is the History Channel’s most popular series with ratings varying from 1.8 million to as much as seven million viewers, and the show’s producer as well as the parent network have not yet released any comment about Chumlee’s possible legal trouble.

A conviction on drug charges might result in serious consequences, but the situation may vary based on the kind of offense and the defendant’s criminal history. More leniency may be shown by the prosecutor if it is the defendant’s first offense, and a criminal defense attorney might negotiate an agreement that provides for the defendant to complete a drug diversion program in lieu of more severe penalties.
