New discounts for outstanding traffic fines

Some California residents have a limited window of opportunity to clear away some of their traffic ticket debts. The superior courts in all 58 counties in the state have approved an amnesty program for people with certain types of outstanding traffic fines. Those residents who qualify will be able to get a discount of between 50 and 80 percent off of their delinquent fines.

People hoping to get a 50 percent discount must meet certain requirements to qualify for the amnesty program. Applicants must not be in repayment with a collection agency, and they must not owe any restitution payments to a victim or have any outstanding criminal warrants. Additional requirements for the 50 percent discount depend on the county where the traffic violations occurred and the type of traffic violations that the applicant was charged for. However, DUI citations are not included in the program.

A person who wishes to qualify for an 80 percent discount has to meet all of the same requirements for a 50 percent discount. In addition to the initial requirements, an applicant for the 80 percent discount must earn a monthly income that is 125 percent less than the federal poverty line. Each applicant for the amnesty program must pay a program fee of $50.

Some traffic citations are issued in error and can be dismissed once the accused driver contests them. A lawyer can often help a person who has been charged with traffic violations to dispute the charges in front of a judge. If there is overwhelming evidence that traffic violations were committed, a lawyer may help a defendant to avoid excessive fines or other penalties by negotiating a plea deal with the prosecutor.
