3 accused of kayak theft in California

On May 26, three people who were accused of being involved in the theft of a kayak in California were taken into police custody. The incident was reported at 7:58 p.m. in the 1100 block of West K Street in Benicia by a neighbor.

When the authorities arrived, the neighbor who alerted the authorities reportedly stated that four people were in the process of loading the kayak onto the vehicle. The four individuals were located and three were taken into custody. The three individuals were identified as a 27-year-old male resident of Hayward, a 36-year-old male resident of Moraga and a 45-year-old female Napa resident. The identity of the fourth person was not released.

The three individuals were ultimately charged with possession of stolen items, conspiring to commit theft and various probation violations. Authorities stated that it was believed that the three individuals may have been involved in other residential burglaries that had occurred in the area previously.

The consequences for being charged with theft can vary depending on the cost of the items that were allegedly stolen and if the person accused of stealing the items has prior convictions. A criminal defense attorney may determine the best strategy depending on the circumstances of the arrest and the nature of the evidence. In some cases, the defendant might plead innocent on the basis of having no knowledge that the incident was to take place. In other cases, the attorney may find fault with how the evidence was obtained. If the evidence is strong, the attorney may choose to negotiate an agreement with the prosecutor that would involve having the defendant entering a plea of guilty to a lesser offense.
