California residents may be interested to learn that a Perris city councilman entered a guilty plea to charges that he possessed methamphetamine with the intent to sell it. The 29-year-old man’s plea was entered in court on May 11. According to police reports, the man had reportedly contacted the police in order to report that his iPad, which had been issued to him by the city, had been stolen. Responding officers asserted that he appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine and that he was found to be in possession of the drug.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the prosecutor agreed to dismiss three other felony charges and two misdemeanors. The man remained free on $30,000 bond following his plea entry. He is expected to receive a short jail sentence followed by three years of supervised probation.
The defendant had reportedly called officers to a Perris motel where he had spent the night with two men, one of whom allegedly stole the iPad. After sending several text messages demanding the return of the device, the other man replied that he should not report the theft to law enforcement officials as they would be able to tell that he was high. The councilman’s term is scheduled to expire next year.
