4 detained in California carjacking

Three California juveniles and one man were taken into custody on Dec. 18 after the four individuals allegedly were involved in a carjacking. According to police, the incident began shortly before 8 p.m. when the four individuals drove up to a Toyota Camry in a Nissan Versa and stole the Toyota at gunpoint.

Police spotted both vehicles shortly after, but as the chase reached speeds of 100 mph in the westbound lanes of Interstate 580, San Leandro police stopped pursuing them. The Toyota was later spotted by sheriff’s deputies from Alameda County, and but officials were unable to stop the vehicle.

However, around 8:30 p.m., police located the Toyota outside an Oakland residence. When the four individuals returned to the vehicle, police began pursuing them again. The Toyota then came to a stop and the individuals fled, but police brought in a helicopter and police dog to find them.

The four individuals were in custody before 10:30 p.m. that same night. Two of the individuals were 17 and one was 16. The 18-year-old allegedly had a gun. All of them were charged with suspicion of armed carjacking, and the 18-year-old is facing weapons charges as well.

Because this type of theft is a serious crime, the individuals may wish to work with attorneys. In a case like this one, the approach to defense for the juveniles may differ from that of the 18-year-old. In some cases, juveniles may face less severe penalties and may not have to carry the charges on their record past the age of 18.

The 18-year-old might wish to work out a plea bargain. In a plea bargain, an individual may plead guilty to some charges in exchange for a lighter sentence.
