Two Watsonville men were taken into custody and charged with drug trafficking crimes on Nov. 26. The arrests were the culmination of a month-long investigation by federal and Santa Cruz authorities that turned up more than $40,000 and over a pound of methamphetamine.
A team of officers led by the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration executed search warrants on the suspects’ Watsonville homes located on the 300 block of Locust Street and the 100 block of Airport Boulevard at around 2 p.m. The California Highway Patrol, the Santa Cruz Police Department, the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office and the Santa Cruz County Auto Recovery Task Force assisted with the searches. Investigators allegedly discovered narcotics, cash and evidence of drug distribution and sales.
The suspects, ages 39 and 28, were detained and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a controlled substance for sale. The 28-year-old defendant was additionally charged with transportation of a controlled substance. He was on probation following an April 2013 arrest for transporting two kilograms of cocaine in California. He is being held at the Santa Cruz County Jail on $125,000 bond. The 39-year-old suspect is being held on $50,000 bond.
Those accused of serious drug crimes such as drug possession or drug trafficking can face harsh penalties in court including fines and lengthy incarceration.
